The Governor and Political Council of Cape Town decided that
because of the unrest reigning at the end of the eighteenth
century to store ammunition in Stellenbosch. Consequently it
was decided to send a consignment of cannons and rifles, as
well as gunpowder and ammunition, to Stellenbosch to ward off
possible enemy attacks. The VOC Kruithuis was erected for this
purpose on the Braak.
